Sound Problems

Well just strarted using linx a little bit ago and I'm am running MAndrake 9.2. But i have a problem with sound .When i boot up an error message pops up and and it says.
Error while itializing the sound driver

device/dev/dsp cant be opened 9 no such file or directorty)

I open up some music and there is no spund

do i need to install sound drivers if so how do i do this

or is there some other way of doing this

There is no sound driver being installed at boot up as sound may not be configured properly yet.

Try running sndconfig as root.

But you are better off upgrading to 10.x.

The newer versions of Linux feature support for more sound cards and integrated (read as lame) sound chips found on motherboards.

9.2 would only work with a couple.
