Sound Issues

Hey, i've been running mandriva powerpack 2006.0 and well everythings been running fine. I use gnome as a wm and its been working great, but all of a sudden i went back to my pc after it was on for a couple hours and i got this error.
Quote:

OSS device "/dev/dsp" is already in use by another program
and now i cant hear any sound in gnome but when i start up kde i get sound. Any help?

KDE uses its own sound daemon (artsd) to do software mixing.

I would assume that you are using alsa for driving your sound card, but is sounds like there is a legacy application which is grabbing /dev/dsp for its own use.

If you want to get your sound back and you don't know what is taking it.

do this at a command prompt

fuser -k /dev/dsp

That will kill the application hogging your sound card.

Hope that helps get you started.

Gary
