What type of mother board do you have, is it a pentium II or AMD Athlon?
I do not know why you are having so much difficulty it sounds like some sort of compatability issue, during installation mode, you can configure your sound card. Have you run any updates to your kernel or have you run that script to add and remove RPM's? d-1 Quote:

I have a Polaris 400 from Jetway(www.jetway.com.tw). It's based on the VIA XT400 chipset for AMD Athlons. My packages in Mandrake 10 are the default selections and the standard 2.6.3-7mdk kernel - not modified in any way. It picks up the soundcard in harddrake and alsaconf. It just doesnt detect it anywhere else!

Your mother board may not be compatible to work with Mandrake 10.0 is there anyway you can upgrade your mother board?
You can normally pick-up an affordable motherboard at Fry's for around $100.00 d-1 Quote:

So are you saying that you can listen to sound let's say playing when playing a music CD, but you cant hear any sound when booting up or playing a game?

Nope no sound at all. I'm in the UK so it isnt really affordable for me to order something from the US :D.
I dunno, maybe I'll try reinstalling mandrake with a different soundcard plugged in. I've looked at my mobo settings and it won't let me disable the onboard sound - no jumpers or BIOS settings, so I assume that when you put in a different card, that card becomes the default. |
Must be my mainboard - I just tried a reinstall on mandrake with another soundcard plugged in. Mandrake picked up both of them, but neither of them worked. So it must be a certain hardware/software combination!

I got the same problem with you :)
my motherboard is KK266 with CMI8738 onboard I bought a new soundcard......also CMI8738 PCI It works fine.... under Mandrake 10 official but only have 2 channel I think the driver :snd-CMI8738 is for PCI interface.... |
In the end, I got a new mainboard, which has an integrated Cmedia 8768 card. Now it works fine! Must have been the particular configuration or something...

Make sure that your cd 1 source is ticked in the media section of the package manager (on the page before you click 'install packages'). Have you tried alsaconf from the console? this is preferable to sndconfig as it is newer. If neither alsaconf or sndconfig work, i suggest getting a different soundcard. Mandrake 10 seems to have major problems with this particular card configuration.
