Sound Card Kills X?

I installed an Audigy sound card. The card itself is okay, because I use a dual boot and it works fine with WinXP. However, when I tried it with Linux, it found it and gave me some options, but once installed KDE stopped working. Or is this just coincidence?
The error messages say:
Failed to Initialise NVIDIA kernel module
Fatal Server Error no screens found
X10 fatal IO error 104
(Connection reset by peer) on X Server

What's going on here?

So it's X that isn't working. Have you got the official nvidia drivers installed? If so try reinstalling them. Is it an nvidia based card?

NVIDIA is the graphics card, but these error messages started when I installed a new sound card (SB Audigy) which is the puzzling thing. Is it a resource sharing problem somehow?

It does. Should it be turned off in the bios?

I would think so, if you're using a seperate sound card. Having said that, the error messages point towards nvidia. See if turning off the onboard sound works, then have a look at your graphics settings.

I've not touched the graphics settings... it was all fine until this sound card went in (ironically I posted to another thread saying how well my NVIDIA card worked with Linux ) I'll try turning the onboard sound off.

Turning off the onboard sound doesn't seem to be possible in bios... it may need jumpers changing on the mb or something. Anyway, reinstalling the NVIDIA drivers seemed to work. Seemed to. KDE worked, but then as soon as I logged out, messages came on moaning about faulty windows and needless to say X was gone again. At the next boot, it also claimed to be unable to find the sound card (not that I could get any sound anyway). The only way to start X now is to begin each session by reinstalling the drivers. What a mess!
