Sound Blaster Live problem

Hi,

I can't get my Sound Blaster Live to work with Mandrake. Tried installing Mandrake 10.0, 10.1 and 10.2rc2. The module "snd-emu10k1" seens to load just fine, but the sound is completely broke. If I open KMix and raise the AC97 bar a strange noise appears, if I change the PAN bar the noise goes to the left or right channel. In KDE's "Sound System" tool, when I click the "Test Sound" button I start to listen a really strange knocking.

Here's what I have already tried and did not work or changed the symptons:

- Using a Kernel 2.4 from an official Mandrake distro.
- Compiling the newest Kernel 2.4 and 2.6 from kernel.org with the "config" file from an official Mandrake distro.
- Compilling the lastest ALSA with Kernel 2.4 and 2.6

I've also tried to install OSS for both Kernel 2.4 and 2.6. Installed without any problems, it detects my card just fine and "soundon" starts smoothly, but when I run "osstest" I get an "input/output error".

I tried using the module "emu10k1", instead of "snd-emu10k1", and the KDE sound started to work (the opening tune, system bell, etc), but If I try to play any WAVE or MP3 file the system freezes and I have also NO MIDI.

Anyone have a clue about what's wrong ?

My motherboard is a SOYO SY-P4ISR with a VIA97 soundcard onboard. I've disabled VIA97 on BIOS and also the jumpers on the motherboard.

Thanx for any help.

PS: I have a partition with Windows 2000 with everything working in this same PC, so it's not a hardware problem.

I just had this same problem with a sb live card. I had to set a new machine and found an old p3 450 dell.
it also had onboard sound but that wouldnt work either. I installed ubuntu and mandriva 10.1 and neither worked at first. I needed to reinstall mandriva for some other reason and decided to pay special attention to the configuration screen in the mandriva set up. I found it had three options for drivers, I changed to one randomly and it worked. I think you can reconfigure the soundcard driver from control centre without doing a full install though. I am not sure why it worked and that is why I am giving so much detail.
