Solution to the hang up probs in 10.0

I kept getting the "not syncing" kernel panic trying to install 10.0 community. To get past this, I did the following. I hope this helps everyone...

At the installation menu, Hit <F1>
at the boot: prompt type:
linux acpi=off noapic ide=nodma

worked like a charm. I think the main problem was the ide=nodma as it wouldn't work at all without it.

Hope this helps!

Ron

But ide=nodma implies a HUGE perfomance penalty. Maybe someone has a different fix?

But doesn't doing that only pass the parameter to the kernel during install only? Or does it actually make it part of the kernel that gets installed and used after installation?

You just tell the kernel not to use that feature. If you want to compile it without DMA (I don't see any point in doing this) you'll just have to well, recompile it.
