I could be wrong here, this is just my uncommon sense here, but it is not possible to really hide your IP. I know alot of my Windoze friends think they have software to do this while they are using file sharing pograms. Your internet provider furnishes your IP address, on their severs is a history of your billing address and who you are and all history of your internet activity. Anything can be traced back as far as your internet provider and they can be asked or served an order by the court to reveal who you are. Most programs are updated with known ip's of the RIAA and similar bodies, and simply blocks those ip's from connecting to you.
BTW: Did you ever get that serial polaroid 320 working?
A properly configured firewall will hide your IP address. A lot of hackers ping ip address looking for a system before they try to crack it. If you have a good firewall it will turn off this ping response and the hackers wont know your their. When that happens they move on to the next ip address and try to hack them. Most often a windows machine
