Slow response when network connection is down

Hi,

When the network gets down (i.e., when I get disconnected from the internet), Mandrake becomes very very slow. Applications like "Console" or "Kedit" or any other application for that matter take ages to start up or respond to user actions. It looks like they are blocked for a couple of seconds before they respond. Any idea what might cause this?

Thanks in advance,
Stoic

If you are in kde your localhost setting in /etc/hosts might be no good.Any kde app takes forever to startup then.

Indeed this happens in KDE. How should the /etc/hosts be specified to not have this forever-startup issue?

Mine looks like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost cervskol

where cervskol is the machine's name as per /etc/hostname

My /etc/hosts is not really different, except for an extra IP:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.253 <myMachineName>

So I don't think it is that. There must be something else wrong when the internet connection is lost.

Try to add your machine's name to the 127.0.0.1 line.
