slow internet connection speed
Mandriva 2005 LE & Prolink 1456VE external modem
My internet connection speed is very slow and I donīt know what to do. Please help! |
what type of connection do you use and did you ask your isp what the dl/upload speeds are. another good question is when does it happen? opening pages downloads uploading pics or movies or music?????
|
I am on dial-up.
Each time it connects on 9600 kb/s ( at least thatīs what KPPP tels me) |
9600kbs??????? might want to look into that from your isp cause hell a 56k modem runs at under 26kps and my dsl runs a download at around 130kbs but yes dialup is gonna feel like its draggin well it always did for me. you say its running slow but may i ask what you are comparing it to?? like a school pc or work pc or what?
|
SORRY. "kbps" you are right, but it took me 10 minutes just to respond. The point is that is very slow and I donīt know what to do.
This site is my only source of information and with this speed I canīt even search for answers here ` cause my connection is to slow |
if its an external modem you can try moving the modem away from speakers/moniter, stuff like that if that doesnt change it call your internet service provider and you might want to think about upgrading to dsl or cable instead of dial up.

"you might want to think about upgrading to dsl or cable instead of dial up."
No comment I would be happy to get normal dial-up speed |
Your ISP provider should give you information about upload/dwnload speeds provided by them.
Also, what speed is the modem ? Last, check your Kppp settings and initialization strings. try these strings: at+ms=56,1,300,44000,1,0,28800 or AT&F&Q6&C0&C1&D2&K3B0F10 good luck |

the technical description of the modem is really 56k?
cause it shouldn't be connected at 9600bps can you please post the files /etc/ppp/my-chat-script #i'm not sure if exists /etc/ppp/ppp-on there is a setting to set a higher connection speed than 9600bps to ,let's say for a test 38400 another thing that I've had before with a 56k modem was that the cable from the modem to the line was very long. If it's very long, like more than 3 meters then it would be a problem cause of the noise created from the curlings of the cable. if you have a long cable try using a smallest maybe |
Yesterday I realized why it was connecting on 9600bps. In KPPP I did not change connection speed. I changed it on 57600 and after that it connects at 45000-48000 but it did not change the actual speed. After reading your post I changed it again on 38400 and it seems that finally it works fine. Thanks

also there are 2 speeds for dial up modems 56k and 24k. but neither run near what they say they do. your 56k modem will never run at 56kps like its rated why the 56k name is beyond me. |
the 56k is really the theoretical max speed, ie if you are close to the phone exchange, line conditions are v good and you don't have your house loaded up with long lengths of phone cable / too many phones plugged in. before i upgraded to dsl, i could get around 48 - 50 k on one of the phone lines in my house or 32k every time on the other line. it's frustrating, but a lot of factors have to be spot on to reach the full 56k
