slow internet browsing


MDk 10.1 offical w/ 4 iso

i have a linksys 8 port switch and that is connected to my modem but i have been noticing SLOW web browsing . i have a 256up and 128 down connections and i will WATCH my switch and say i go to www.distrowatch.com and hit enter........ it will ping with one packet then nothing for 5-10+ seconds and then will start pinging and will finish the page. i have tryed firefox 1 ,mozilla, and konquroe and all have the same slowness. why is it going so slow?

The first step I would take in troubleshooting this problem is to boot up something else such as knoppix live cd or something. This way you can eliminate hardware or isp problems, and confirm the problem is with your mandy.

I asked this question right here a few days back, in a thread titled "10.1 official: long delay during name resolution by web browser". The solution given in that thread worked for me.

The suggestion to try booting with Knoppix is generally a good one, but it doesn't always help - see the same thread.

Here is the solution that worked for me (copied from a previous post)

Seems like IPv6 is on by default which causes a problem

Try adding those 2 lines at the end of the /etc/modprobe.conf file:

alias ipv6 off
alias net-pf-10 off
