Question Slow Gnome load

I normally use KDE but I wanted to get my familiarity with Gnome to the same level as KDE. For this reason I have switched my desktops to run Gnome for a while. I am running Mandrake 9.2 and PCLinuxOS2K4 which is based on MDK 9.2. The problem which is happening on both is during desktop load when the Gnome 2.4 splash screen is displayed it gets stuck on the Icon for the 'wnck-applet' for a couple of minutes and then all is fine. This started to happen after I got the desktop all setup the way I like it. Wallpaper, programs and one workspace. I also have a home intranet server running on Mandrake 9.1 so I switched to Gnome on that one which is 2.2 and there is no 'wnck-applet. the applet is located in /usr/lib/. I did a google search and round out nothing at all about it . I guess my questions is first what is it, second what does it do, and third , can I remove it from the start up file or delete it.
