Shut-down question on 10.1?

During Shut-down, it does not want to shutdown automatically like in Windows. This happened in 9.1 also, but 10.1 dirung shutdown phase, it says this:

Shutting down System.....Press ESC for Verbose Mode" and then it hangs and hangs and then I have to shut it down manually.

What do I have to do inorder for it to shutdown automatically in 10.1? I also checked the ACPI or something, and is unchecked, so I do not know if has anything to do with it or not. Also the Force no APIC and the Force no Local APIC are also UNCHECKED.

What do I have to do now?

This happened to me when I had my external USB hard drive running (during start up too). It needed to be turned off before I booted or shut down.

Mandrake seems to have some issues with USB, so I gave up my grand ideas of booting with USB hard drives, or even using one for swapspace.

Check your external devices, and if that isn't it, you can check out the guides on the Mandrake site. Sorry, I'm not used to saying Mandriva yet, but the old address still works.

Here is a link to the guides:

If it isn't a hardware problem, then it may one of the services refusing to quit when it should. I see that you are using SUSE, so I don't know the equivalent of Mandrakes 'harddrake' (checks for new hardware), but I would check the following:

harddrake
hotplug

and apic as well as acpi off in the BIOS.

Not much help, I know, but try turning off as many services as you can to see if that helps, and if it does, then turn them back on one by one till you've found it.

I have just installed Mandriva and have found that there isn't even a shutdown option in the menu choices, only a log-off option. So I have to resort to an unclean power-off.

Can anyone advise what I have done wrong? Perhaps I missed something during installation. I also tried Mandrake 9.1 and have found the same problem.

Sorry if I'm lagging behind on this, but would appreciate any comments.

Cheers.

Go to "Configure" => "Start-up" and check "ACPI".
Hope it does it.

If you can't powerdown from KDE, either you logged into x/kde/etc after you were logged in in the shell, or your security setting is high enough that only *root* can power off.

To test if you have permission to poweroff, type "poweroff" in a cli as your usual name (system should power off if you have permission), elsewise: you'll have-to su root first.

Defiantly check "enable apci" in lilo config generator. Without that some machines won't power down after the os is done.

In the append section(s) of your /etc/lilo.conf file add acpi=on then run the lilo (/sbin/lilo) program to install the bootloader, reboot and see if that works
