Wait for the "Official" release, then upgrade.

That's what the repositories are for...

To give you everything you are "missing"...

e.g.

Huh?

installing the packages via urpmi

e.g.

urpmi xpenguins

WILL INDEED add them to the menu, that's part of the reason to utilize the mdk.rpm packages to begin with.

xpenguins will appear after time much like the xsnow program...

or like xroach, when you move a window.

However these programs normally must have some "X" rights adjust so that they can gain access to the screen.

Launch xscreensaver-demos for more information on what you may need to adjust.

That is a completely different question.

You initially asked if you should upgrade to 10.1.

Upgrading the kernel is warrented either to fix a security problem or to add additional hardware support or bug fixes.

Unless you have an over-riding reason to do so, wait and perform a CLEAN install of 10.1 when it is out.

To do so I usually boot up from a Live CD, then remove everything except my working and home directories, and /etc/fstab. EVERYTHING else gets trashed recursively.

That way you can perform a clean install using exactly the same partition structure without loosing your important data.

A clean install always works better than an upgrade, but it can be tedious having to back up your files.

The above permits you to bypass the backups and restore.
