Should I upgrade?
Hi there,
I have finally decided to try out Linux and see if it can replace my windows installation sometime in the future, but I have a few questions before I install.
1. What's the best way to install when I wanna be able to use both WinXP and Mandrake Linux?
2. Can I access my WinXP NTFS files from Linux?
3. I've got some CD's with Mandrake 9.1 on them. Are they fine to begin with, or is it better if I download Mandrake 10 and install that version first? What are the big differences for a newbie like me?

oh, one more thing:
How much backing up of my windows installation would you recommend before I start my Linux adventure?

well im using 10.1 community right now and its been running great for me.one thing you should check
hardware is supported.
and as for reading your windows xp partitions, mandrake does a great job of this, look in /mnt/ and it should have a list of your windows partitions in there..
I didnt do any backing up, but some people do have problems, so its not a bad idea.
and as for way to install, use free space and auto allocate, works the best usually.
hope that helps answer your questions..

Well I run Mandrake 10.1 and it works great.
For the backupping part, to be on the save side, backup your personal files. That is never a bad thing.
Normally everythings goes right, I never had a problem with a Mandrake / Windows installation.
Good Luck with your install.

I've just installed 9.1 now, and it almost works perfect. The only problem is that I cannot connect to the Internet.
I'll look around in the forums and see if there's a solutions somewhere...
Thanx for all your help and advice

Note that Mandrakelinux 9.1 is past the end of lifetime. See the Mandrake end of life chart for more information.
There have been enough improvements in Linux that I strongly recommend you upgrade to the latest release. Mandrakelinux 10.1 (Official) is scheduled for release 10/15/2004 (tomorrow!). I am using the Community release at this time and I am very pleased . You can do as you wish, of course, but I think you will get a better experience with 10.1 as opposed to 9.1 - especially if you are new to Linux.

I think I'll download 10.1 when it comes out then. Hopefully it's easier to configure my internet connection there
