Several problems with Totem and other media players
 

I am using mandrake 9.2 with KDE and a Radeon 7500 and a CMI8738 sound card.

Everytime i try to play an .avi file with totem, the program will crash and say something about a fatar error and a number like 3645 ( i cant remember exactly), sometime the whole computer would freze or the mouse would stop working.

Also, VCD playback is VERY choppy, with long pauses every few seconds and an eventual program crash. DVDs wont play at all.

For some reason any midis i try to play sound really bad, with many anoying sharp tones offbeat rithm. Im using xmidi.

AVIs ,VCDs and MIDIS play very well when i boot in windows.

I am sure the problem is not with my hardware since mp3s an tux racer work fine.

Or maybe you can suggest me other media players to use?

sounds very much like a dma issue... ensure it is enabled, use hdparm and read the hdparm manpage for details of its use
