Setting Default Printer in Mandrake 9.1

Hello -

Is there any possible way to set a printer to default in Mandrake 9.1? I couldn't find anything for certain in printerdrake.

If possible I would also like to set the default paper size the printer will use.

If it is not possible to do this figuring out how to set the default printer (and paper size) in openoffice would be a wonderful second option.

Presently, openoffice always defaults to Generic printer and A4 paper size when I want to use my <Printer> with Letter sized paper. Since I often forget to manually switch, this is a source for great irritation as printouts are always screwed up.

Thanks for any help with this.

Hmmm, not sure what you are asking here.

CUPS is probably handling your printer. If you put http://localhost:631 into your browser, you will be able to configure all sorts of things for your printer, including the default paper size (looks like you want it to be set to "Letter").
f your printer is already set for "Letter", but OO is defaulting to "A4", then you need to change something in OO. You can either do this with "Templates", or a quick hack is here:

http://lists.ssc.com/pipermail/linux...er/013534.html

Although this is an old post, and with my version of OO (1.1.3) the file to edit is now at:

~/.openoffice/user/psprint/psprint.conf

Note that PPD_PageSize is defined more than once in this file.

It is strange that OO does not seem to have an easier way to set the default paper size.

Hope this helps.

Good Info

Thanks for the reply.

I didn't know you could access CUPS that way. Very nifty. I went and looked and CUPS was default to letter so the source of OO constantly defaulting to A4 must be internal. I will look at the template issue. However, I wondered if you or someone else could clarify something. I went to the link your provided and there someone said

Quote:

I've defined several printers though the "spadmin" tool and set the
default paper size to letter there since all of my printers are using
U.S. Letter sized paper. Of course when creating a new document it has
no effect unless the main psprint.conf file is changed.
Bascially, what this person is saying is the same thing my OO help told me . . . ie use spadmin. However, I don't know how to use spadmin. What is it, and how would I access it? I tried typing in "spadmin" from a console but with no luck. If modifying a template works then I'll be happy, but I wouldn't mind know what spadmin is, and how to use it.

Thanks again for your helpful reply.
