Serial Mouse wont work in Mandrake 8.2

I confess to near complete ignorance about Linux, so any reply should be step-by-step basic. I only have the first CD for Mandrake 8.2 (and that was tough to find in the little Mexican town I live in) but I installed it on its own partition on my Windoze machine, no troubles -- that one has USB mouse. Installed it on an older Pentium class 233 with 256K ram and 10 gig hard drive as the sole os. Mouse worked fine through the installation and on the mouse test program. Then on reboot the cursor only moves erratically after a ten second delay from when the mouse is moved.

Have tried re-installing half a dozen times with different configs and packages, nothing helps. Under KDE I can move the cursor using the keyboard (after <alt> f12) and everything else seems to be working OK.

Tried two different brands of serial mice, same results.

Someone using the handle 'warspell' suggested on a forum changing the mouse configuration in the XF86Config-4 file to show 'Auto' as the protocol and '/dev/input/mice' for the device, but that didn't work either.

Peter and Stan Klimas mention in their book that KUDZU interfered with the working of the mouse on one of their systems, so I tried disabling that, but it didn't help.

Can't get Mandrake 9 version around here (not sure if that would help), and with dialup net connection that often runs at 16kbs I can't download it off the net. May try mail-order but that can take 6 to 8 weeks, if it arrives at all.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Serial on Mandrake 9.1 KDE OK!

Im using Madrake 9.1 on a AXP 2500+ with a serial mouse and it seems to work fine, so if you can upgrade, you ought to at least sign up for one! Cant you buy a new mouse? Mice are so cheap now, you can pick them up for about $5 US!
