security keeps putting me back

I've managed to compile garnome, and after much wrestling, managed to get it to load
by changing from GDM to XDM so I could start it using startx. If anyone can tell me how to configure GDM to give me a choice of Garnome, I would be most appreciative!

When I reboot it goes back to Gnome 2.4 I presume because of security file that prevents changes. I would love to have the choice of 2.4 or 2.6 but can anyone tell me how to prevent it from reverting automatically ?

MDK 10
upgraded kernel to 2.6.6rc2
Garnoome niighly build about 3 days ago
