Screen rez changes at log out

Running Mandrake 10.1 Community.
Each time I log out, the screen rez changes to 1260x whatever. This is unsupported on my video card/monitor set up - the screen goes blank and I can't log back in or anything. Forced to reboot machine (ahem) manually.
Anyone know why this is happening and how I can stop it - normal sessions use 1024 rez which is great.

thanks

the solution to your problem is probably somewhere in
/etc/X11

it may also be the case that your kernel parameters stink - what are they? (look in lilo.conf, or menu.lst aka grub.conf)
