The other way would be to turn off the automatic fixing of home dir permissions in the Mandrake Control Centre->Security->Set Security Level...->Periodic Checks and disable 'Check Permissions of Files in User's Home' and 'Check files/directories writable by everybody'. But this is a bad, hacky, security-compromising solution so try the group ownership thing first
This disables the particular security checks that seem to be the problem. You can disable all security checks I think by setting the security level to really low in Mandrake Control Centre->Security->"Set Security Level"

In the Mandriva Control Centre go Options->Expert Mode and you should see the rest of it. Mandriva has this not so smart idea to hide half the control panels to make the thing look less intimidating, problem is they don't make it obvious how to unhide things or even that there are things hidden.

I had it set to high, now its set to standard, but under the periodic checks tab, its just blank.

There must be something wrong with it - on my periodic checks tab I've got a whole list of things which I can turn 'Yes' or 'No', and I'm only using standard as well.
