Running Slow!
 

I just loaded MDK 9.1 two days ago and it seems to be alot slower than XP. Is it normal to have 20 - 40 seconds wait time before apts load? My computer is not that old......maybe 15 months.

Gygabit GX7-Pro
Athlon 2100+
768 MB DDR Ram
40 Gig Maxtor 7200
Invdia GForce 2 64 Megs DDR

XP flies on my box ..........just wandering if there is a way to tweak 9.1 so that I can get better performance!

Take down services you aren't using. If you aren't running a mail server stop it, if you aren't running a web server, stop that. Check out a few threads around on stopping services not in use.

Other options for speed increase:
* Use other window managers (fluxbox)
* Use other applications
* Do more things in a command line (not too many people are fond of that at first though ;) )
* Recompile your applications for your hardware (you can use SRPMS to do this so you don't actually have to use the source, check out 'man rpm' for more info on that)
* Recompile your kernel to streamline what gets loaded (specific to your hardware)

Grab the NVidia drivers from www.nvidia.com and install them, that'll help with speeding up X a bit.

Services though, that seems to be the number 1 thing to improve system performance.

Hmmmmm..... your system should not be running that slow. Try running the command "top" to see what processes are running and what amount of cpu time/mem usage each is using. If one of them is maxing out the cpu or if you are constantly swapping... see which process is doing it and kill it, and then look to upgrade the software as there likely is a bug.

I've seen slow performance when the system is not connected to the Internet. I believe it is a nameserver problem. I've had it intermittently when using Linux. I've been on routers and using internal nameserver for the past few years and haven't seen the problem in a long while. If you connect to the Internet is it faster? You can also edit the hosts file and point the ipaddress to the name of your machine, leave the localhost name in there for obvious reasons.

I find issues like this are usually related to the HD. Post the results of:

hdparm -tT /dev/hda (assuming you have one IDE drive)
