rootproblem

Hi

I have a strange problem. I can no longer log in as root in mandrake 9.1
The password I have i correct cause when I want to do changes to the system in KDE they need my rootpassword and It works.

But at the loginprompt I can no longer login as root, it just says
Login incorrect.

what shall I do?
I could log in as root yesterday.

can you login as a user and use "su" to access your root account?

Or you could try logging in as a normal user then:

K
Configuration
KDE Control Centre
System
Login Manager
Aministrator mode butoon - type root password
Users tab
Uncheck the cross next to Root user, in "hidden users"
apply

Log out
Log in

You'll now see a new icon for root user which you can login as root for the whole session

I'd strongly advise you don't though - just use su in a shell when you need root privilages

Thanks! The su command worked just fine.
Tomorrow I,m heading for the library to get some linux for dummies books ;)

This is likely the result of setting a higher level of security in Mandrake. Disabling root login is a good security practice. You may also look into using the "sudo" command (It's worth learning!).
