Hi jchance,

Well, basically, I want the default root's KDE environment/desktop
has some functionalities as in regular user's KDE environment.

That is, in root GUI the simple right mouse click on the desktop
doesn't bring up the usual context menu as in a regular user's setting
let alone completely blank panel bar, not even a system clock.

After all, other distros have similar look and feel in root environment
as in a regular user's environment albeit less icons on the desktop/
panel bar. Also, the right mouse click on the root's desktop properly
brings up the context menu.

True, I can achieve all this from a regular user mode via "su", but
the overall setting would be felt more at home if both regular users
and root's environments are consistently similar.

That's all.

BTW
Now that I think about all this, I wonder if this is due to the "high"
security setting during the initial install of PowerPack.

Irregardless, thanks for your feedback.

Just to prove to myself it could be done I undid the Mandrake crippling of the root KDE one day. All I had to do was go through the KDE control centre and look at each setting and set it to something nicer or more sensible. You could also try copying the ~/.kde directory from a non-root user (remember to change the ownership on it to root:root) and restart X.

Either way you shouldn't do this. Mandrake had very good reasons for crippling it - you simply should never run a desktop as root. If you need to start individual programs use su, sudo or kdesu. You can also change programs to start under a different user in the menus I beleive.

I think it does the crippling no matter what you set the security to.

Hi tkedwards,

Thanks for your tips. Even though Mandrake's intention
on root environment is different from what my expectation is,
I think it's good to know a workaround.
