hi, there! how're you doing? well, i have some problem here. i want ti watch some MIT lectures. however, my totem doesn't play these kind of files. nevertheless, i was told that mplayer would be able to play rm. sadly, there are no rpm packages for mandrake. does anybody know what i do?

Hi,
The real player is available for free to download for linux. Try downloading it and playing it on that.

Mplayer will be on your install disks ( they have been on every version i have installed from 9.1 to 10.1) so you can use the install software program in the MCC.

If for some strange reason you havnt got them on your disks just do a bit of googling or try rpmfind to find the mandrake rpm. They definately do make them for mandrake.

Cheers

According to me, the best thing to do is to manually install it.
You can specify all the binary libraries you need, activate processor-specific optimizations and
more

"ME" is wrong... ;)

Your best bet is to follow these directions: http://www.zebulon.org.uk/urpmi_en.html

Then as root type in...

urpmi gmplayer mplayer totem

and everything will be automatically installed...

Simple and painless.

if i were you i'd use real player you can get it here:

http://www.real.com/linux/

You can also obtain the Mandrakified version of RealPlayer on the CD's or DVD's of the "Official" release.

thank you all! in the end, i downloaded and installed the realplayer for linux on mandrake, it sounded easier than the other options. anyhow, thank you very much. :D

opjose 12-01-2004 07:37 AM

You still should (MUST!) set up your URPMI sources as indicated.

C'mon it's easy... you can do it!

limp 12-01-2004 08:31 AM

well, i downloaded the packages (plf, contrib and main) from easy urpmi as the website instructed. however, when i typed :
Quote:

urpmi gmplayer mplayer totem
i got this message :
Quote:

no package named gmplayer
what is wrong? are you sure that it's the right package name?
by the way, thank you opjose - you're a real good helper! :)

opjose 12-01-2004 08:38 AM

My bad.

Gmplayer is installed as part of the mplayer-gui

So instead change that to

urpmi mplayer mplayer-gui totem

eh, if you did as the web site instructed, you didn't really "download" the packages right?

You merely set up the "sources" so that URPMi can download them for you...

limp 12-01-2004 08:57 AM

yeah, i probably used the wrong term. i basically just followed the significant instructions, not more than that.
right now, i finished the installation (right?). however, it seems like that nothing was changed, but mplayer was installed.

rram_k 12-01-2004 11:21 PM

Hi
Even if you are installing mplayer, you have to install the real player for mplayer to work. Mplayer as far as I know needs seperate players (for mpeg,mp3,rm...etc) for each formats. It just integrates these players to form a single player.....

Nothing will "seem" to change. However you'll now have new entries under Multimedia/Video.

For Realplayer you want the Mandrake RPM's available on the Official 10.x CD's.
