Resolution Issues

My Setup:
Dell GX270 (Basic configuration, nothing special)
Dell 1703 FP Monitor
WIn XP on 1 hard drive
Mandrake 10 on the other

My Problem:
When launch KDE, GNOME, etc.. I can see about 1/4 of the screen and when I move my mouse it will move the screen accordingly. The only way I can see the whole screen is if I change the resolution to 640x480 @16bpp. If I change the resolution to anything other than 640x480 the screen scrolls. If I try to increase my colors I get an error "EE Screens found, but no usable configuration". So I thought I would update my graphics driver. I downloaded the .rpm file and used the software installer to install it, but I don't know if it worked. I was thinking maybe I need to change the DPI for my monitor? But then again I don't know how. Any suggestions?

joining the club

well, as with most people who are posting threads here I am new and trying to instal a version of linux on my Dell Laptop. My first attempt was with Mandrake 10 installs fine but wont boot. all i get is either a green or a yellow screen. when its booting up there is a Failed under Interface with eth0. I thought that had to do with an ethernet card but maybe not. I then figured well, i will try Fedora Core 2. Same problem. It seems for some reason it has no idea what kind of monitor that the laptop is using. why? i am not sure. its very new only a few months old so i dont think it would be an age issue. I have also gone through both installs manually and choose what monitor it is. still a problem. i would hate to give up but after about 5 installs i am not sure what i am doing wrong or if my laptop is just anti-penguin. Any help would be appreciated of course
