Remote XDMCP Login Problems

I have two linux machines, a laptop and a desktop, which until recently were both running Gentoo 2007.1, and both machines allowed XDMCP Logins from the other one. Handy for updating one while busy on the other!

I've just put Mandriva back onto my laptop, and attempting to login to the desktop machine via XDMCP causes a kernel panic. The desktop machine is still going strong without problems since its kernel was updated just over two weeks ago. There are no problems accessing the machine locally or from the laptop via nfs/ssh etc.

Anyone got any ideas for pointing me in the right direction to solve this??

Thanks-in-advance...

Well, I didn't get the kernel panic sorted out, but it did encourage me to put Mandriva onto the desktop machine as well, where I hit another problem..

I thought I had everything sorted with /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc edited to have
Xdmcp=true (instead of false), along with /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess and Xwilling both seeming ok.

I've just spent the last 2 hours messing around with different firewall setups,:study: only to realise that I needed to put an exclamation mark (!) in front of ~DisplayManager.requestPort: 0 to comment it out.

All working as it should now :)

BTW, has anyone else noticed that after connecting to another Mandriva machine via ssh, getting root access, and running mcc gives a desktop gui?
