reconfigure kernel with pcmcia enabled

Hello alltogether,

I am new to linux and I want to install my PCMCIA-WLAN Card.
When I run make config for the pcmcia-cs the program tells me to

"reconfigure and rebuild kernel with pcmcia enabled"

I do not have any idea how to do this. Can anyone help me?

Hi maybe u should use Debian. My laptop [Toshiba] just runs with standard kernels 586tsc and 686 fine with card support.

Maybe Mandrake has some other kernels you could use? My last Mandrake installation is 4 years ago, but I think you might be able to use other kernels. Also have a look at lsmod insmod modprobe and look if you have anything pcmcia like in /usr/src/modules.

Maybe you should post in the laptop section of LQ

So the options are.

1.) give more info about your config computer and so on
2.) Learn kernel compile and modules
3.) Reinstall some other distros, aka use linux Mobile and follow a intruction according to your Laptop model
4.) Wait for Mandrake user that had the same problems as you

Although this unanswered thread doesn't look to hopeful

So you think Mandrake is not the right distro for using it on a laptop? Do you think Debian would work better? I am really brandnew to Linux so it is important for me to get an easy distro to get started with and that works fine on my Toshiba Satellite 1130-Z23.

Would you recommend me to install Debian instead of Mandrake?

Blah, what BS.

Mandrake has the PCMCIA support already set up by default.

There is NO NEED to recompile the kernel 99% of the time no matter what you may be told, as all the modules come precompiled.

You may want to investigate why your card is not being automatically detected by kudzu instead.

Usually if you have a supported card, Mandrake will pop up a configuration box during boot.

If you are not seeing this then you may have a non supported device/card or a conflict in your hardware.

I've seen cases where a particular device would prevent the kernel from detecting certain cardbus devices.
