Google for compile linux kernel will give you a million answers. It also helps if you put howto in the search (newbie also helps for really simple howtos)

Why do you think you need to compile your own kernel? It might help to know what you are trying to do. Generally, you only need to compile a kernel if there is a specific feature which is not compiled into the kernel.

urpmi kernel-source (this will install the kernel sources for you)
cd /usr/src/linux
su (become root)
If you need to apply kernel patches before you compile, now is the time:
patch -p1 < file.patch (obviously, replace file.patch with your patch file. it needs to be in the same directory.)
make mrproper
make menuconfig
A menu will come up that you need to choose options for. If you don't know, the defaults will probably be ok. If there are specific changes you need to make, do it now. After you exit, be sure to choose "save".
make
make modules_install
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-new

Then you need to edit your /etc/lilo.conf. Copy the section for Mandrake and change /boot/vmlinuz to /boot/vmlinuz-new.

If you're not comfortable doing any of this, then you probably don't really need to recompile your kernel.
