Recommended powerpack 2008 partition sizes ?
 

Hello,

A friend lended me a mandriva powerpack 2008 for testing and if it is working fine with my hardware I'll certainly purchase it (I already purchased a mandriva 2007, but a motherboard dead forced me to upgrade many components, and that's the occasion to test the 2008 version).

However, I have no idea what might be the recommended partition sizes (swap and / )for a mandriva 2008 ?

In case there is a relation, my computer has 2 GB of RAM and room isn't really a problem, there's 300 GB free, minimum...

I had considered 10 GB for / and 2 GB for swap, but I have no idea if that's correct...
Please, what's your opinion about it ?

I have been using a failsafe way of partitioning for a few years now, in that I have a separate partition for /var /home /var/ftp /(root) swap (of course) and /tmp

So when upgrading I don't have to format /home as it is on a separate partition to /(root)

2Gig for swap is heaps, you'll barely use it, but it has to be there. Mine is 2Gb too.

I would use more than 10Gb for the rest, perhaps 20 to 25 for a test machine, to be sure.

Good luck, and remember that mandy 2008.0 free is available, and the rest of the packages available from the powerpack is on line and available via setting up your sources with easy-urpmi.

Mandriva doesn't take up a lot of space. A 10GB / partition should do for most situations. I made a 12GB / and with quite a few packages installed - and many of them twice (both 32 and 64 bit) - it still took up only some 7GB. The remaining space should be enough to handle temporary files. Still, you may need a few GB more if you intend to install some large third party applications (things like IBM Symphony, Adobe programs, etc.). Or maybe not, you can always install them in you home directory as well. I just find that approach a bit messy.

Those are good choices, and I would suggest you also set up a user partition which will be mounted at /home with as much space as you think you will need. The /home directory is where your personal and data files will be stored so if you keep a lot of music or video on your drive you will want to make the user partition big. On my system here, I set up a / partition of about 10 GB and a swap partition of about 2 GB, then allocated the remaining space on the drive to my user partition.

The user partition is often called the /home partition since it is mounted at /home in the Linux file system.
