RealPlayer - Arrgghhhhhhh,, (Assistance with STANDALONE RP please)

Hi all,

Problems with the above..
Initially RP would not run embedded in Firefox (ie, streaming content from bbc for instance).

I have searched the threads on RealPlayer, and have installed the suggested win32 codecs and others from various places..
This solved (wonderful!!) the embedded problem and I can view video and hear audio from www.bbc.co...uk etc.

However, there is a link to RealPlayer in the menus but it does not run as a stand-alone app. Also, there is the option on (eg) the bccto 'run in stand alone player'. Both of these fail.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled RP just incase but it still does not work. I also downloaded it from the RP site and tried that - no luck.

Any suggestions please ?

Cheers and Season's Greetings

Does it fail with Red Hat and with Knoppix?

I've had similar problems running in KDE, eventually tracked it down to another media players file somewhere in the home directory's .kde directory. I found the rogue file by the instructions in thread

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=391577

If you can try creating another user first and determine whether you attain full firefox/realplay functionality.

Good luck

Thanks !

I can't answer the Knoppix and RH question becos Mandriva is the first Linux distro I have got **serious** with..
IE - I expect it to FULLY work, to do everything (and more !!) that windoze can.
So I have tinkered with Knoppix and RH but have not tried testing them to destruction ;-))

I have tried running RP in a terminal (launching it in a terminal I mean) and I get an error to a directory not being created (from memory).

However the link looks interesting. I'll have to give it a try.
Xine and totem work fine for Divx and other files. RP frustratingly (as I said) works fine 'embedded' but not standalone.

That is essentially the only fault I have so far found on the setup.
Thanks again for the pointers. I searched on here and found I had to install extra codecs to get RP to run embedded, but they did not help for standalone.

Cheers again.
