Thumbs down Realplayer 8 will not work

Installed mandrake 9.1 that came with realplyer 8. When I click on the menu for
realplayer it tries to open but then hangs? I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it
but it did not help?

you can start realplayer from a terminal window using the command
realplay

see if you get any error messages. You can start it as root by using su to become root and then
realplay

No error messages, just tries to open and the outline of the screen appears
and then just it hangs there and will not do anything. A couple of times it played
the start up realplayer sound when it tries to open but it doesn't do that any more.

how did you install realplayer actually? Did you use an rpm and if so from whom? I used the rpm from real and that one works fine for me. There are also others who build rpms.

The first time it was installed with mandrake 9.1. I unistalled it and reinstalled realplayer to see if that would help with the remove and install software packing.

are you using the powerpack edition of mandrake?

Maybe the RPM from real will work better:
http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html
select linux 2.x RPM. You'll have to uninstall the one currently installed first.

Yes, Im using the powerpack edition.
Before I installed 9.1 I was running 9.0 and had downloaded
realplayer 8 rpm and had the same problem in mandrake 9.0 so I never
used it. I thought installing 9.1 would correct thr problem since realplayer
came packaged with the powerpack.

I'm afraid I'm out of my wits. I can only suggest to try out another rpm - from Real or Texstar; I think mandrakeusers.org has their version too.

strange

i've has real player on since i started with linux
i've been using mandrake for 7 or 8 months
and real player has ALWAYS installed and worked (up to a point)
RP8 for linux is unstable, crashes a lot, loses audio, gives white noise spikes then requires a sys reboot to get audio back etc
but it's always installed and worked initially

there is a linux support forum at the following address
http://realforum.real.com/cgi-bin/un.../wwwthreads.pl
