I wiped the smaller partition and did a fresh reinstall, got everything back and that allowed me to reinstall KPPP via the network monitor. I checked the other partition for any KPPP.pid files, found none, but something else may be lurking in there. KPPP will still not work, detects the modem but freezes when trying to initialize. But, I can use ppp0 from the network monitor instead and it dials and connects fine. Go figure. So until I can sort out KPPP, I have a workaround.
I found a post on PLF with some Real codecs, however they are for x64. My Linux box is an old AMD Athlon 900 on an MSI/Gateway board and am a bit hesitant to install something that could cause more harm than good. If you guys think this might work, I'll give it a go. A friend is playing with Mandriva on a 566MHz P-III eMachine and he has exactly the same problem as I do regarding the old RA files, although the newer ones play fine.
Just as an added comment, I have an adsl connection, where I connect through a modem via ethernet.
I don't heve to use kppp, or anything else, although it is available, The modem is configured with my login info and I connect directly. (direct connecting via eth0) Can you do that?
As for the wincodecs for RA files, keep looking, seerOfSouls (sos) and MDE are other repos that also support software not legally distributed by Mandriva-main(official)

Good luck,
See you 'round the posts, Glenn
G'Day Glenn,
Computers can drive a bloke troppo. After a few Black Ducks, you won't care. My Ozzie mate in Melbourne has a son who is a Linux guru, has been working with it for ten years. So far, he hasn't been able to help with the KPPP glitch either.
As to the login, cannot do a direct connection as I only have one house phone. As I said, I use the Internet about two hours per day on average. A friend with a cable modem has downloaded Mandriva 2007.1 for me and will mail the DVD, so I may try an upgrade to see if that cures the dialup problem. If not, no worrys, as ppp0 works.
I like "Kppp" too. When I was using Dialup, it worked well and was configurable. IMHO delete the entire application, then re-install "Kppp". It should work, unless there is that missing file<s> from another application<s>. Suggestion, since YOU have External Serial Modem, try using "wvdial" if YOU have it installed, or on CD-ROM Disc. "wvdial" is semi-automated. See "man wvdial" in terminal for details. Or here http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.p...her_with_Linux This also helpful... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wvdial This is Q&A... http://alumnit.ca/wiki/index.php?page=WvDialFAQ
Finally bit the bullet, backed up all the files I had installed on CDRW, then did a full reformat and reinstall. Luckily, I kept notes on what I did when I installed and configured it, so I knew what to do to get everything back like I had it. It works perfectly again. One thing I learned about Linux is if you accidentally screw something up, you may not be able to fix it. Knowing what NOT to click on is more important as knowing what to click on.

A friend with cable downloaded Mandriva Spring for me on a DVD, so I did the upgrade. Only glitch was in K3B. It wants root privileges, but you cannot assign that in the latest version. No problem, it runs fine without it, just check the box to ignore it.
While tinkering with KMPlayer, I decided to try the mplayer codecs instead of the default xine. Noticed that, unlike xine, double-clicking does not toggle full screen, have to use the F key. BUT, it will play RealAudio files perfectly, even the older ones. (xine will not.) I have the Helix RealPlayer installed, but no need for it now.
I rarely use mplayer (except in firefox) and did not realise the application of realplayer files in linux/mandriva.
Cheers, Glenn.
Glenn,
Been playing around with KMPlayer and discovered it will also play FLV! I had installed the FlashPlayer plug-un for Linux, but couldn't get it to work until I selected the mplayer codecs in KMPlayer. They made some changes in the Spring version of Mandriva so setting the file associations is a bit different. I ended up going into KDE Configuration, selecting File Associations, then going down the list and adding KMPlayer or moving it up to the top for all the audio and video files I wanted it to play. You have to be sure you get EVERY instance as it may appear two or more times. Miss one and it will revert to the prior association. Also, list the extensions in both upper and lower case, so you can use lower case for one player and upper case for another, if necessary. It took a bit of experimenting, but all is working fine now.
I should have left well enough alone. I had to substitute "k3b" for "cdrecord" because cdrecord was not found in that folder. It did something, because now K3B will not run at all. Double-click on the icon and it does nothing. Any way to undo that "fix" to get it working again?
