Radeon 7200
Has anyone tried updating drivers for this video card? I just (successfully - whew- ) installed Mandrake 9.1, but my video now sucks. I want to update the driver, but have NO idea how to go about doing it. I don't know how to tar, or run command-line (shell?) scripts, or much of anything else linux. My driver isn't correct in the drop-down Mandrake configuration utility... must not be because I'm getting all kinds of screen flicker.
Thanks,
Duke

I have the Radeon 7200 card in my T30 laptop. After installation of Mandrake 9.1, the screen would go black when I rebooted. I found that when I removed the 3-D support, everything worked fine (well, except for 3-D support). I, too, would like to the upgrade the drivers but I'm not quite sure how to go about doing this.......

I like the idea of getting third-party drivers, or drivers from ATI itself. I did get the most recent (0826) ATI drivers, and installed, them, but still had the horrrible horizontal screen flicker. Every time I move a window on my screen, I get a flicker.
The drivers seemed to install okay from the command prompt, but how can I tell if they've successfully installed, other than by rebooting and checking my screen?
Can y'all provide specific instructions i.e. where to put the files I donwload, what commands to run on them, etc? I've already re-installed Mandrake once, will do so again tomorrow (messed up somehow, can't load anymore - just to get a freakin video driver installed so I can get 3d).
Thanks!

Do NOT rely on rebooting here!
Edit your /etc/inittab file as root
You should have a line like:
id:3:initdefault:
Yours probably has a 5 instead of a 3, change it to a 3, and you will start in console mode when the computer boots up instead of running X.
As for seeing if the driver is loaded, I'm not familiar with ATI (my previous laptop was crap, but the replacement coming has ATI video -- send me a message if you are willing to wait a few weeks but still want help), but you usually load the kernel module driver with modprobe drivername. You can see all the kernel modules presently loaded by running lsmod.
Then, if the module is loaded properly, you can type "startx" to test the X server. If it works, exit X and change back the inittab file. Then, type "init 5; exit" as root or even better yet, as you appear to be a newer user, reboot the machine.
