Ok once in XTerm (when Xterm opens up) I type in 'su' hit enter. right? Then it will ask me for the pass, right?

I know what you mean by becoming root. Its the same as for Windows with the "RunAs" feature. I know what you mean. But in Linux its quite different for me.

Once I type in the pass, then what command should I use??? Please write the exact command (in Bold) so I could print this transcript of what we had discussed.

To open up Gedit I use Xterm and I type the command: gedit/etc/module.config. right?

It would be nice having another PC running the Mandrake while explaining this to me

And is there a modem to download from the net? Or what type/model external modem should I get?

So under Xterm, I should type the command:

gedit /etc/modules.config

Is this right?

And then undet Gedit, what is the command for disabling the eth0 card?

gedit

just use the command "gedit"... then you can open whatever file you want to edit from within gedit, like with wordpad/notepad on windows...

remember that you need to run the command "xhost +" before doing the "su" so that root can use the graphical display.. if not, you'll get an error like this when you try to run "gedit":

Quote:
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

(gedit:1723): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

This the last time Im going to confirm this before I start Linux again. Just to confirm

So under Xterm (under root), I should type the command:

gedit and then hit Enter

Is this right?

And under Gedit, what command should I type to disable the eth0 card?

And when should I type the command:
etc/modules.config??

And once the this has been disabled, could I still use the Internet if I have the right modem?

Where could I download the right modem and what type and model?

YES.

you don't type any commands in gedit... it's text editor, like NOTEPAD on windows... look at this screenshot:

http://gedit.sourceforge.net/main-window.png

that's what gedit looks like... you're just using gedit to edit the file /etc/modules.conf...

Quote:

etc/modules.config??
that's not a command.. it's the file you wanna open with the editor... actually, it's /etc/modules.conf

Quote:

YES. you could do that even if you don't disable this...

Quote:

you can't download a modem, buy if you mean where can you "buy" one, i guess at amazon.com or something... i don't know... i've never used a modem on linux... i'm sure somebody else can recommend a good modem for linux...

Im still a bit confused though

When in Gedit.... what should I do to disable the eth0 from loading? Do I type this:

/etc/modules.conf

and then I hit Enter???

and what would be the next step?

Im still confused

What is the exact script do I have to write in Gedit to disable the eth0 from loading?

And are you sure this will work to disable it?

all you gotta do is look in /etc/modules.conf for the line with your network card's module and put a "#" next to it...

WE'VE BEEN THROUGH THIS ALREADY. LOOK AT POST #47 AND #58

THERE IS NO /etc/modules.config. It had a blank screen.

When I was in Gedit it gave me a blank screen so i typed in /etc/modules.config and I hit enter.

Nothing happened.

Im still confused. This is too high-level for me.

I could not see /etc/modules.config in there. It was a blank screen.

Please explain step by step on what to do at this point.

once again, you don't need to type /etc/modules.conf in gedit...

/etc/modules.conf is THE FILE YOU WANT TO EDIT...

you need to open that file with gedit using the regular procedure of going to the "File" menu, then clicking "Open", etc...

just like if you were opening a TXT file with notepad on windows...

this is cuz you're in your home folder... you need to be in the "/etc" folder if you want file "/etc/modules.conf"... "go up" to the root folder ("/") and then go into the "/etc" folder and then "modules.conf" should be in there...

to "go up" you double click on "../"

FINALLY I GOT IT
I was about to hang myself.

Now all I need to do is get an Internet Connection and everything is OK.

I need a modem thats compatible with Linux. What type/model should I get? Im running right now a Us Robotics 56K fax Modem.

What will I have to do in order to get the righ one for Linux and Windows? Or is there a way to obtain a connection on this current modem?

i'd recommend you start doing some reading and stuff to get yourself more aquainted with the linux way of doing things... i mean, it's great that you managed to get mandrake installed and all without knowing the basics, but knowing them will save you a lot of hassle...

a good site for linux documentation is:

http://www.tldp.org/

and whenever you wanna search for something about linux, use google's linux engine:

http://www.google.com/linux

I got to hand it down to you, thanks for all the help. I mean really.

I saved all the transcripts that we had discussed and attach it to the install notes.
