Question on MandrakeLinux installation

I was wondering if it is OK to just download the first CD ISO. Are the other 2 ISO files necessary to install Mandrake Linux?

masand 08-28-2004 03:31 PM

hey
it depends on ur requirements
what packages u want to install..
generally the first 2 cds contain important software

i heard somehwere here that u could startoff with 1st cd and install it over netwotk from the internet mirro sites

Also, why is this? It was downloading at 40k/s approx, and then it kept stopping and resuming and now its at 14k/s. It went for several minutes at 40k/s and now its down to this BS. I cant wait 15 hours. Im using GetRight BTW.

hi
this happens while downloading
at first u get high speeds, but once the server gets stable it goes on with a stable spped
try looking out for some other mirors of ur distro whihc is closer to ur location

I just need the internet packages, like the internet security software(firewalls etc.) and browsers.

Thanks for the replies.;)

Anyway where can I see what each disc contains? I cant find it on the MandrakeLinux.com site.

masand 08-28-2004 03:55 PM

Jay Smith 08-28-2004 05:35 PM

Im doing a new installation Ive made a new partition.

Anyway what is on the discs does anyone know a link?

mugstar 08-28-2004 05:41 PM

The most minimal installation of Mandrake I've ever done (i.e. no KDE, Gnome, servers etc) still needed CD1 and CD2.

Jay Smith 08-28-2004 05:52 PM

What about CD3?

mugstar 08-28-2004 06:39 PM

Nope. Bear in mind though that this was a _very_ minimal installation. If you're not sure about what you're doing, go for a single-disc distro. Have a poke around here and see what you can find.

Jay Smith 08-28-2004 06:45 PM

I think then Ill have to D/L the three CDs, I can do it its just a bit of a hassle. I want to stick with Mandrake, because its the most userfriendly distribution and Im a newbie to Linux.

Just a question, is Mandrake much faster than Windows? How much faster are other distributions?

Also, is the security as easy as Zonealarm? I like the way Zonealarm is easy and it asks whenever an application tries to access the internet, like Realplayer does out of nowhere.

Linux has firewalling capability built right into the kernel. The most straightforward firewall config tool IMHO is guarddog. It has excellent documentation too.

masand 08-29-2004 12:24 AM

hi

also whjen we talk about speed here
linux can be tuned for a optimal performance(windows camnnot be tiuned so much)
close the service u do not require, choos e a lightweight desktop
then u may compile ur kernel,as i have done and i am gettitng better performance than windows here

and i though do not use mandrake but i have heard that it is one of th good user freindly and easy distro in linux available

am i wrong here????

floppy here

Just exactly do you want a minimal Mandrake to do ??

If all you want is a firewall / router
Try Smoothwall or Clark-connect
these distros are specially designed to be firewalls
and I know Smoothwall has pretty good documentation

you need to tell us what your plan is
ie :- why do you want a minimal Mandrake

If you want a full working operating system
then you'll need all four CDs
