Question about compiling the kernel?

I want to compile a new kernel in order to see if it my wireless card will work. My question is I am running Mandrake 10 with the 2.6.3-7mdk kernel, I want to compile a 2.6.7 kernel. Can I just download the 2.6.7 kernel source from the kernel.org website and compile it my self? or do I have to use the 2.6.x-xmdk kernels in order for Mandrake to be happy?

You can download the source and compile your own.

To make it easier, there might be a config file on your system that Mandrake used to build the stock kernel. On Fedora and RedHat, they're usually in /boot . If there is one, after you copy the source and untar it to /usr/src/linux-2.6 , copy the config file to that directory and name it .config . Then when you start "make [menu,x,old]config", it will get loaded in as the base. You can start your config from a kernel you know will at least boot.

But Mandrake usually has patches it makes on it's kernels. I am just worried the kernel I will compile won't run too well on Mandrake.

Well, then, I'm sure Mandrake has Kernel source RPMs.
