programs &KDE loading slow in 9.2
I installed 9.2 and got everything running just find including many custom apps, the only thing i have hade a problem with after dowloading all the updates is my lan connect.
I was getting no ip address.Reconfigured again tonight and my pc asked for disk 2 and installed something but i did not see what it was.Now i am connected to my windows computer using samba/komba and the network seems just fine but now everything is loading real real slow (I have a 3.06 pentium 4 processor and 1 gig of ram )restarted and kde took 3 mins. to load instead of 30 secs. All programs take 4 times longer to load than normal. The system monitor is not showing anything strange.Processor and memory usage seem normal. Help i dont have a clue what to do next. Thanks in advance

i also got the similar problem in redhat 8 and 9.
after installation it worked fine but after few days , i activated my eth1 and restarted my network by
#/etc/init.d/network restart
after doing this , when i restarted my computer next morning, it was real real slow computer.

i was not able to find what is the problem? so i reinstalled my OS, by taking backup.

I have tried to upgrade 9.2 to fix my apps starting slow now i have no lan, gnome will not start at all, urpmi and all the configuration wizards don't work, update is broken, mozilla is now taking 5-8 mins. to start up,konqueror will not work as a file manager only as a web browser after 10 mins startup time.My memory and processor usage still look normal. This is the fourth reinstall in ten days.Even after dlding all updates each reinstall i seem to find a different problem everytime. Can updates be saved to disk or bought on cd.It takes me two days to dld them all each reinstall. This is getting old fast.Seems like since i started using linux 6 months ago i spend more time fixing my computer than using it for something productive.

can you be little more specific? after reinstallation when problem comes?
what is the type of installation? upgradation is not solution of these problem. if you could able to upgrade karnel or reinstall karnel, it may solve problem. what type of apps you have installed ?

just finished with a fresh install of 9.2(enterprise kernel) downloaded all available updates, and installed about 1 gb of plf apps.I had my lan up and working fine befor installing updates but no modem untill i turned lan off. After updating modem works fine and all the kde desktop bugs are fixed but lan does not work .When i configure lan to automaticlly assign a ip nothing happens (no ip is assigned)But it wants to install more software. when i configure with a static ip the wizard shows the connection is up but my windows box says(unable to renew ip address). If i let it install the software kde and apps take ffforever to load .So i gues that i am back where i started i guess that i can live with out the lan for now if it means going through another reinstall.

Reinstall erased all the hard drives in my box not just the one i had checked BYE BYE BACKUPS

over all everything is running better than ever now. several apps that would not work before are working fine .

The only other problem i am having is slow data transfer between drives
from dvd data disk to hard drive i get 2mb/s and several dead stalls on big transfers
from hard drive to hard drive i get 10 mb/s these drives are ata100 and ata133

gigabyte 8inxp mainboard /1 gig ram pc2100/pentium 4 3.06 processor/nec 5800 dvd rom drive/nec 1100-a dvd burner/nvidia geforce 4 video card/creative sound blaster 16 sound card/wetsern digitial ata100 60 gb hard drive/maxtor ata 133 80gb hard drive/onboard lan/usrobotics 5686 v.92 external modem/epson stylus c 82 printer/epson perfection 1260 scanner/

to many custom apps to list most are mulitmedia and internet related
Thanks for the replies so far just let me know what other info you need and i will post it
Many thanks erik

slow data transfer rate may happens due to several reasons. it may be due to improper driver. Linux install default driver according to hardware but sometime it take wrong device. you should check hardware compatibility with Linux. 10mb/s is perfect data transfer rate, it means u are trasfering 1 GB in 100 sec. so i think it is fine, but i may be wrong?
