Program update or instalation problems

As an ex-windows user, i'm trying to figure out how to install or update programs on mandrake. I'm use to the little instalation wisard that comes with almost every programs and updates on windows. I know that this procedure doesn't exist on linux. I downloaded some programs, succesfully instaled a few of them (by luck most of the time) without really understanding what I was doing. Here's a typical exemple of what often happen; I use K3B 0.8.1 to burn cds and I want to update to 0.10.3. (the new version). I went to k3b web siteand from the download page, I searched for an update but it seems that there are none. Only the full version of 0.10.3 is available. If I download the full version, should I uninstall the old one before installing this one or will it simply recognise my version and update it? If I have to uninstall 0.8.1. first, how should I procede?
I switched from windows to linux simply to get of that microsoft racket. I generally don't regret it but I often wish it would be great to have a little linux-knowitall-fairy next to me when I'm stuck on that kind of situation (every week!).
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Ether
It depends on the software editor. you may get an installation script that will propose an update or a fresh install, like in Microsoft wonderland ...
The best would be install your software using rpm if k3b propose this option, you could then use the urpmi tool to update it.

Hope this helps
Jeff
