Problems with Kopete
 

Hey guys,

This is the second time it has happend. I did a second install of Mandrake 10.0 Official and after running the script I can't open up kopete. The hour glass runs and runs then disappears at the bottom of screen.

This is the message I get when I uninstalled and attempted to reinstall.

Any suggestions on how to correct this error?

why are you using a developer/test source for packages? you problem is the kdenetwork stuff is built on 3.2.92 libraries, but you're running kde3.2-79. you're basically gonna have to upgrade most of KDE to do that. try getting the kdenetwork packages from a 10.0 official source, not a developer sources & make sure they match the 3.2-79 version of KDE.

Well otish I learned the hard-way so much so in fact, that I uninstalled the kde components that I thought was causing the interference, well I lost my Konsole, then I rebooted and lost all of my icons as well. I was able to get to the MCC on reboot with no icons and did a reinstall of kopete and all of it's packages and I was going to go back and get the kde Common packages, but I could not boot into my desktop or menu's. I tried everything but all I had was the blue Mandrake 10.0 backdrop on my desktop.

Looks like I am going to have to reinstall and reformat.

How do I upgrade most of my KDE or better yet, is it even worth doing it? It's the 3rd time I've lost kopete when running the script and your explanation on why it is conflicting makes sense.

Is running that script not good enough to update it KDE?

ok, here's my opinions/experience with KDE upgrades & trying to mix different KDE libraries with assorted apps.

in a word.............. disaster.

please note, this is not intended to start a debate, to anyone else that might read this thread. these are just my opinions, & mine alone.

i'll explain a bit more. KDE (like all DE's) are built on a set of libraries. KDE is based on the QT libraries. the verison of KDE that came with MDK10.0 is 3.2-79. if you try to start mixing & matching cooker or developer versions of KDE apps with the stock MDK version, yer gonna meet with heartache in the form of dependency hell eventually. (like you just found out, the hard way) and, to add insult to injury (again, like you just found out) all it can take is one wrong version of a KDE app to be installed to make things go horribly awry. depending on what dependencies (no pun intended) that one app might want to install with it, it can bork up the whole works when trying to install other things, or uninstall things. you have mixed library versions, urpmi/rpmdrake get confused, don't know which dependencies to look at to use, walla, you're screwed.

as for KDE upgrades, i myself just wait for the next release with the new version of MDK. why? because, KDE can be a bear to try to build from source, KDE doesn't make MDK rpm's, & if you find third party MDK rpm's, chances are they aren't gonna be built to the exact MDK specifications & you're gonna have trouble somewhere down the line. i have yet to see any huge improvement with KDE from one version to that next that i can't wait for a proper MDK rpm to come along for.

i don't use kopete, so i can't answer your question about the script, sorry. just keep in mind about keeping like version numbers the same when installing KDE stuff. IE:kdebase-3.2-79 needs kde(nameofpackage)-3.2-79 & vice versa. stay away from developer & cooker sources & apps unless you know what you're doing & you're prepared to be a guinea pig & fix things when they break.

I appreciate the advice and your opinion. I have lost kopete 3 times running my script and no wonder. I guess I could have installed gaim instead and been without kopete, but I like the fact that kopte shows when a person is typing, or is on-line/offline.

The one feature I like is that gaim offers, is sound, and also the fact that you can press the [enter] key when sending a message.

Looks like I have to reload all over again, but hey, man did not get on the moon on his first try. It actually took a few monkey's.....you learn from your mistakes.
