Problems playing cd's on Mandrake

I'm running on Mandrake Linux, and so far I like it.
However, I cannot get any cds to play from my cd rom.
I went to root and gave permissions to users,
And XMSS etc will start to play the cd but no sound comes out.
Now, I know the speakers are working because other things I can play and hear, like .avi files.
but not cds.
I cannot live w/o my muzic...
Please help!!

Check out your audio settings.

Go to your RUN command box, or in the terminal/konsole type:

aumix

and play around with those sliders.

Or, try using kscd - another CD application

in the RUN command box, or in the terminal/konsole, type:

kscd

Do you get any sound there?

If not, post back and we'll see what we can do. And half-life 2 is going to rule!!!!

You will likely have to connect that little cable from the back of your cdrom drive to your soundcard

MsM 05-28-2004 08:08 PM

ok i don't have aumix but i did have kscd. and I was able to previously play a cd, actually a friend was. so i know it should work.

I thought maybe it was the speakers, so I plugged my headphones in too.. still no sound. :(

Don't be ashamed. Everyone's a :newbie: at one point. I am still one after 3 years, in a sense (and I have run either Linux or FreeBSD on my desktop exclusively for almost a year). You may not have aumix (you'd have to install it seperately anyways), but you have kmix, I bet. If you were to try from a command prompt, I bet you have alsamixer as well. If you open kmix and look at your "master", "pcm" and "cd" levels, you may notice that they are muted.

Most likely, though, is that you may need that little cable installed, as there is something with alsa/2.6 kernel that is still being ironed out. No digital output. Can you play mp3's? System sounds? If so, your mixerlevels are ok. You need that little cable connected.

ok this is the message i get when I try to use totem media player:

Totem could not play this media (Audio CD) although a plugin is present to handle it.
You might want to check that a disc is present in the drive and that it is correctly configured..

vectordrake 05-28-2004 09:47 PM

Can you play any other audio?

MsM 05-29-2004 03:17 PM

i tried playing a video (.avi) on totem and it worked.

oh here's something new. It will play certain cd's but not others. ???

This sounds more like a filesystem problem, then. Maybe you can add the offending omission as a module. What does the cdrom section of your /etc/fstab say?

Hi Guys - I also had a problem with audio CDs - after installing 10.0 CDs would no longer play - KsCD would start and go off to wally world. It appeared to be picking up an old config from 9.1 I deleted ~/.kde/share/config/kscd.rc and all was well. Also caused problems with other apps that looked at the CD drive.

Cheers

there may be a problem with 2.6.x kernels. On every 2.6.x kernel I run I get the same thing (I've ran Fedora core2, Mandrake 10, A custom 2.6.6 kernel). I think a cable from the cdrom drive to the sound card will fix it. Even if you've played it before without it (have no idea how your freind might have had mp3s on that cd instead of a normal audio cd) try the cable, and if you already have the cable, your cd player program may be looking at the wrong device some how. Even if Mandrake loads the player when you put in a cd does not mean the player will actualy work. You said that totem gives you a message asking if it's there so you may not have it pointed at the right drive. check your settings.

the /etc/fstab file says this:

/dev/hda1 / ext2 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda8 /home ext2 defaults 1 2
none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync,codepage=850 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 /usr ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda6 /var ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/hda7 swap swap defaults 0 0

This is also the message I get from Totem. The other players such as xmss won't even help this much.

Totem could not play this media (Audio CD) although a plugin is present to handle it.
You might want to check that a disc is present in the drive and that it is correctly configured..
