Problems installing Mandrake 10.1

Hi
I have just installed mandrake 10.1 and the installation went just fine, but when I boot up the computer and comes to the login screen all I see is funny colors with strange patterns! As you can see it is not possible for me to login and use the computer. Why am I getting strange login screen?

Hope you can help me out.

and set the values for monitor and video card and then restart

for general OS u can run xorgconfig ,but in mandrake XFdrake is more easy

Thanks for your answer.
I have tried XFdrake as you suggested, but for some strange reason it doesn't matter what kind of resolution I choose, the screen is still full of strange colors. I guess Mandrake 10.1 can't run on my system.

I tried both XFdrake and xorgconfig, but none of them works

My screen is still f..... up

I think I will try to reinstall the whole system.

If that doesn't work I will drop Mandrake.

Yes I know

I have been using conservative values to be sure that my monitor could handle it. I have even tried 640x480@60 Hz.

we would be able to help you more if you posted the specs
of your machine and video card
the brand, model specs of your monitor as well
otherwise we are guessing as to what your problem might be

I have a similar problem with windows 98 and a celeron 2.6
and the problem is a video driver, that just wont seem to fix permanently

so please
proc chip & speed, chipset, ram etc
video card especially

rock on over to the Mandriva HCL and see if your video card is supported

http://www1.mandrivalinux.com/en/hardware.php3

you will need the brand of the video card not just the chipset

you can always try the HCL here at Linuxquestions

and here too

hope this helps

There is no information about my video card in the mandrake hardware database. This is however not the first time I have had linux installed. I have had Redhat 9 installed before on the same system so I guess it should work on mandrake too.

How do I post my xorg.conf file? I can't access the linux partitions from my windows installation.

In your "xorg.conf" file, where it says
Driver "nv" Change it to

Driver "vesa"

I had to do this to one of the 10.1 systems I installed using an nvidia card. You can install the nvidia driver later with no problems.

You will need to use vi in text mode. Post back if you do not know how to do this.

The full name-path to the file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Hope this helps, Cheers
