problems connecting through DSL to Router to Computer
 

Hi.

I have 3 Computers in my house that our family uses . Im having problems getting them to work through from our dsl modem to our router to our computers. Two of the computer are windows and mine is linux (of course). But how do I set up my dsl modem and my router and the computers to all be able to connect to the internet. I have MTSDSL PPPoE internet. and a D-Link wireless router.

What settings do I put on Linux for it to connect?
Where do I put the cables to?
Can I get the internet to work?
CAn you tell me how to set up everythign so the internet works on all the computers?

So how is this all connected to eachother? you didn't mention that part...


Like this:

Modem --> Router ---> PC1, PC2, PC3, Etc.

Or:

Modem --> PC1 as gateway --> Hub/Switch --> Router, PC2, PC3, Etc.

You can set it up like this, assuming the D-Link has an ethernet switch on the backside:

Modem --> Router --> PC1, PC2, PC3, Etc.

If it doesn't, add a switch:

Modem --> Router --> Switch --> PC1, PC2, PC3, Etc.

In case one of your computers will use WLAN, just have them connect over the WLAN
interface of the router, either through DHCP or Static IP.
I don't think the modem requires any setup?? it should dish out an IP either through
DHCP or give you a static IP, depending on how your ISP works with that.
So you can set up the router's WAN part with that information. The router will do the
rest when you set up it's LAN part with DHCP and the computers with DHCP, and you'll
have the computers online in no time.

So your steps would be:

#1. Plug modem into WAN port of D-Link Router
#2. Plug your computers into the LAN switch of the D-Link Router
#3. From one of your computers, open up a webbrowser and type in this: http://<IP of your router> and you should be presented with a login box, see your router's manual for the login details. typically for D-Link the username would be 'admin'. Should you not be able to connect, check that your Ethernet adapter has a valid IP address. the router's default IP should be 192.168.0.1, so you could set up your Ethernet card with an IP of say, 192.168.0.25 for example. Then try to access the page again.
#4. Set up the D-Link router to talk to your modem. Either use the Wizard to configure it or do it manually on the page you get after clicking the WAN button on the left hand side.
#5. Set up the D-Link router to talk to your LAN. Either do this when promted by the Wizard in step #4 or do it manually on the page you get after clicking the LAN button on the left hand side.
#6. Set up each computer to reflect the settings you chose for the LAN setup in step #5. If you set the router to do DHCP, set the computers to obtain their IP and DNS settings automatically, and you're done.
#7. Pick any computer, open a browser and try to access the internet. On faillure, open the administration page for your D-Link router again, and check the status on the Status tab, the WAN section will either show if the modem is connected and gave you a valid IP, or it will show that it could not connect.

Well so far I got this set up.

Moden - Router - PC1 ,2 ,3 .

Also before I had it straight to the modem and all I did was use the wizard on linux the ADSL one. Now I just plugged them into the router. Im thinking that its mostly just the settings on Linux. Like do I have to set up through the LAN wizard too? Also would it be easier if I just used a hub? And Also how do I find the IP of my router and I don't think I have the manual.
