Problem with text mode on Mandriva 2007

Hello,

I've been installing every new version of Mandriva since 10.1 on the same computer, a Pentium 4 from Intel. 512 MB RAM, 3.2GHz dual processor. Moderboard also from intel 915, integrated graphics card from intel.

With 2007 a new problem I never faced appeared. My system boots fine, and I can even boot to text mode and everything will be fine. But as soon as X11 starts up, my text consoles get unusable.

With that I mean that as soon as X11 starts, if I do a CTRL+ALT+F1 (or any other Fx) it will change to the console, but the console screen is completely messed, with colorful graphics and I cannot see what I type.

When I shut down the computer it quits X and I see this same bizarre graphics.

I already trying shutting off all the new X Composite and hardware acceleration options that appeared on 2007, but it didn't help.

To configure X I just utilized what appears by default on the installer like I did the other times I installed Mandriva.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

thanks,

What are vga d-sub and dvi?

And where would they be plugged?

I don´t know if this is your question, but I only have 1 monitor.

some video card, and some screen have 2 plugs/leads

the old standard is d-sub plug
the newest fancy plug are DVI

you can use both plugs at the same time, but this
can cause problems

So have you?

How can I find out if I am using both plugs at the same time?

And how can I then set it to only use one?

thanks,

How about following the cable from the
monitor down to the computer's back

Sorry if my English confuses you

Also try to use icewm or windowmaker or gnome instead of kde
and see if problem continues when you go to console mode

Anyway I had a problem like yours and it was a cable issue

Oh, that´s what you mean by plug? I thougth it was a software concept I was not familiar with ...

Anyway, the monitor has 2 cables. A power cable, and a data cable connected to the PC. The data cable has only 1 plug.

Plus it always worked correctly on other Mandriva versions, so I´m pretty sure it´s a software problem.

Yes, I enabled it on installation, to see what it is like.

Then I disabled it after having this problems, but didn´t help.

Have you tried totally uninstalling the 3d desktop programs? I haven't had this particular problem, but have had compiz apparently doing strange things to non 3d environments whilst installed. Uninstalling it has resolved my problems.

That may solve the problem by killing the symptoms/source
but not finding waht the exact problem is
It is a good suggestion though to start from (no pc here to try)

The thing with my compiz problems is that nothing seems to show up that would appear to help in identifying the cause, unless I do not have eyes to see, which is more than possible - how can you make a bug report when there is no output to give? . All I know is that compiz does weird things when installed, whether it's being used or not. Which is a shame. Also, everyone's compiz problems seem to be virtually unique from what I can see.

Anyhoo, I'm veering way off-topic here. Back to our scheduled program...

oh I agree, especially if this a compiz issue.
I have such a garbled screen, it even did it at shutdown once!

Ok, thanks everyone I solved my problem. I changed the video driver from Intel 915 (which refers correcly to my motherboard and it's integrated video card) to Vesa.

Doesn't seam a too good solution, since vesa is supposed to be the slowest driver... but works.

I noticed I don't have compiz installed. I think one of my previous attempts to solve the problem was to reinstall everything without 3D desktop, so that's probably why I don't have it installed.
