Problem with first installation disk 10.1 Official and Powerpack

Help - I can't be the only person who can't get the first disk of 10.1 to boot.

I've been using Mandrake since 8.2 and have tried many other distros. Now because 10.1 does everything 'out of the box' eg playing cd's, mp3's, movies, burning disks etc etc I have removed Microsoft from my computer completely. I am currently using 10.1 community download from 3 cd's.

I have joined Mandrakeclub and downloaded the 6 10.1 Powerpack cd's and used K3b to burn them at 4X on Verbatim RW's which type of disk I have used successfully many times for iso's.

I am having a problem getting disk 1 to boot (my computer is definitely set to boot from cd). K3b says the Md5sums are right before and after burning (I used the 'verify written data' option). I tried reburning it at 2X but it still won't go. I tried using disk2 of Mandrake 10 (remember that problem in 10 where disk1 wouldn't boot but you could use disk2 until it asked for the correct install disk?) and then put in disk1 of 10.1 when asked. It looks at it for a long time then says it still can't find a mandrake installation disk.

I have also downloaded disk1 of the 10 Official download version which I also burned at 2X. My computer recognised this and I got the page where you choose 'F1' or 'Enter' to start the install. It wouldn't 'listen' to either F1 or Enter and after waiting resumed the LILO boot. I also tried to trick it using disk2 of MD10 as above but it said again it couldn't find a mandrake installation disk.

I have probably installed Mandrake 100 or more times and have never had this problem before (except MD10 along with many other users because of the acknowledged faulty iso).

I'm getting a new DVD re-writer in the next day or two – is the DVD more likely to be successful? I had wanted to have the cd's ready so that I could physically install the DVD re-writer before the new mandrake install so that MD would find the writer already there.

I suppose I will have to ask if I can use my daughter's computer and use XP to download and Nero to burn, but this idea doesn't really appeal when I have been bragging about how good MD10.1 is - and encouraging her to make the change.

You may have to specify the noacpi option when booting from the CD to get the installer to work properly.

Check the other threads as this has been posted numberous times.

Basically you ALT something out of the first bootup screen, and specify the kernel parameters on a command line.

Question mandrake 10.1 offical disk failure

hey,

i notice that there are some people having similar problems w/ the new iso's for the official release....
i too notice that when i was downloading from the ftp site, that the iso' were about 728 megs, and as i was downloading (on xp home edition w/ explorer ) that it was saying that the size was about 698 megs and it did this for all 3 disks, no mater how many times i tried to re-download them.... i tested one of the cdroms and it started to install OK, until it got to the kernel images and then crashed.... the mini install seemed to work ok, but was not what i was wanting....

i was hoping to use some of the new features of mandrake for multimedia creation & was hoping i could get it to work.... is this a common problem w/ the iso's? & should some one inform mandrake if they are unaware of this?

No, it seems unusually frequent. I have had the same problem with cd2. I am unsure why this is a problem, as it is usually an infrequent occurrence. I am also having boot problems which show the erratic issues that usually mean a hardware problem -which it isnt. Mandrake 10.1 seems to have problems that are not related to the software, but which are affecting a lot of people.

It may be a symptom of some other problem - but I am experiencing ongoing problems with Mandrake 10., which did not occur with earlier mandrake relases (9.1, 9.2, 10.0) or Redhat (5.2, 6.1, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 8.0) - or other distros.

I can't see why a new distribution would give erratic problems - maybe something to do with a lot of people downloading? That still doesn't make sense. After considerable frustration I am giving up, and returning my desktop to 10.0. - the laptop has remained 10.0, and was scheduled for 10.1 when I was happy with 10.0. I'll give it a few weeks and think about trying again.

This is very odd....it does not appear to be consistent with any other problem I have had with any system - except hardware failure, which I can discount as my legacy Win98 doesn't have any problems....

And nothing on the Mandrake site, as usual.

Jim

reshagalut: because of the way they are counted (can't remember) a kb does not equal 1000 bytes and a mb does not equal 1,000,000.

What you are seeing is the number of bytes in one place and the number of mb somewhere else - although these look different they ARE equal.

I think everybody gets confused by that.

I botched a MD 10 community install and thought I would try 10.1 given I was going to reinstall anyway. Downloaded, using Windows, the DVD iso from a US college located mirror and ran the md5sum, OK. Also, the byte size (1024) matched to the byte.

The DVD booted, though after a lot of hesitation. I did a new install and reformated the partitions which were autoselected. afterward there were a few problems. The biggest was the konqueror file manager/browser failed to open. Nautilus and Mozilla would open though. Second, the driver for my old ATI all-in-wonder card left the screen jittery in the corners. There was a third I can't remember now, but a second try produced the same result.

I went back to my 10.0 Community and it all works fine. I may try again with a new download another time.

Yep, that's it - there are 1024 bytes in a kb.
