Unhappy Problem installing ATI drivers on Mandrake 10.1

I'm unable to install the drivers for my card (ATI Radeon 9800 PRO).. I have tried using the .run file to install them, but it says "X Server: unable to detect." I have also tried using the X.Org rpm file. I followed this guide and it said to run the rpm file, go into init 3, do a few commands, and go back into init 5... The problem is that after going into init 3, I can't do anything that it tells me to... I can't even go back into init 5! I end up having to put in my CDs and run an update install before it'll work again.

When I run the system tests in Cedega, all of them pass except for 3D Acceleration. I read through the Cedega how to file and it said to run the command "glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"." It said that the output should be "direct rendering: Yes," but I get No. It says that if you get No, you should "double check your 3D setup." How exactly do I do that?

What can I do to make these drivers work? I'd really like to play some games like CS:S and such (I've got Cedega and it's working quite well), but I can't because I can't get these drivers to install. Would upgrading to Mandriva 2006 help?

Thanks in advance for any help.

:EDIT: Ok, so I think the drivers are already installed.. 3D acceleration just isn't working...

Reading elsewhere and by personal experience 10.1 had a lot of problems
The 2006 is running beautifully for me now but do a full install and dont format your user partition and u should be right

First: Linux driver support by ATI just sucks. Second: Mandrake 10.1 doesnīt make it better... I remember it took me three days to get my Radeon 9550 to work. I think the main problem was some issue with the kernel 2.6.8* used by that Mandrake-Release. I downloaded the ATI driver and a patch contributed by some guy - unfortunately I donīt remember the url anymore, but Iīm pretty sure it was actually meant to be a patch for Fedora. Anyway, it worked well for me.

But as bobbelfield said, Mandriva 2006 is much better than that 10.1, and I can say from my own experience, that there shouldīnt be any problems with 3d driver installation. So I highly recommend upgrading to the latest Mandriva release.

Ok.. so I upgraded to Mandriva 2006, and all seemed to go well.. except for a color problem. Thinking that this was caused by me doing an upgrade install instead of a full out install, I reinstalled Mandriva entirely, without formatting my user partition (I should have done this in the first place.. it took a LOT less time). I still had the color issue, so I looked around and found out that it was a problem with the version of XOrg used in 2006. I used URPMI to update XOrg and that took care of the color problem.

But.. Cedega still says that 3D Acceleration fails when I run the test. I don't know why.. I see the gears the whole time, but it still comes up as failed. I've tried running fglrxconfig, but that didn't help any. I'm out of ideas.

Also, I'm having a strange problem with my mouse now. Instead of scrolling up and down the page in FireFox, it seems to be acting as the back and forward buttons. It also doesn't work in other applications like it used to. Instead of being able to scroll up and down with the cursor anywhere in the window, I now have to have the cursor over the scroll bar.

Once again, thanks in advance for any help.

Seing the gears in Cedega doesnīt mean anything, because you get 3D Acceleration already with the standard driver shipped by Mandriva, but only on a very low level, by far not good enough for the latest games. Thatīs why Cedega tells you the test failed.
Though I heard other people had problems with the ATI-Driver as a *.run file it worked well for me, so maybe you should give it a try (I used the "ati-driver-installer-8.20.8-i386.run"). In fact, Iīm not sure if I ever tried out the rpm-package.

Did you have those mouse problems right from the start or since driver installation? And which model do you use?

I already installed the drivers... it should be working fine. I suppose I could try installing them again..

I'm not exactly sure when the mouse troubles started. I know that it was shortly after I installed Mandriva 2006. What exactly do you mean by what model? It's a Nyko Airflo, if that's what your asking..

:EDIT: Reinstalled the drivers.. no go, although the gears did seem to spin faster, heh.

Sorry for being unclear, what I meant is: Is it a standard 3-button wheel mouse, or something different?
Please post your xorg.conf

:EDIT: It seems that my mouse wheel is set to scroll horizontally instead of vertically.. how can I fix this?

:EDIT2: I fixed the mouse problem by changing ZAxisMapping from "4 5" to "6 7"

Hmmm, as far as I see it your xorg.conf seems to be ok...

So letīs start over: What output do you get from fglrxinfo? Does fgl_glxgears work?

Okay, so it seems like the driver is installed but not loaded. Now try as root
Code:
modprobe fglrx
and try again fgl_glxgears

Well,try
$> locate fglrx.ko
If you get a warning that your database is too old, run as root
#> updatedb
and then the first command again. If locate finds the module (most likely in /lib/modules/fglrx/fglrx.ko), then run as root
#> depmod
and then again
#> modprobe fglrx

It still says that module fglrx wasn't found.. I'm not sure that running locate fglrx.ko worked...
