Problem configuring wireless with ndiswrapper
Been fighting this a couple of weeks, so I guess its time to ask for help. I think everything is set up right as regards ndsiwrapper, and hardware is ok since it works in Windows. I think the problem is in actually configuring the card. Running "route" gives:

It looks like your wireless didn't get an ipaddress (from output of ifconfig). You could try running # dhclient wlan0, then see if that gives you an ip address. Also, could you output your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0?

Sorry. I didn't realize you were set up with static ip, so dhclient command won't work. Ndiswrapper seems to be working. Unless you really want a static ip, you could change your ifcfg-wlan0 to the following:
ifcfg=wlan0 DEVICE=wlan0 BOOTPROTO=dhcp # IPADDR=192.168.1.101 # NETMASK=255.255.255.0 # NETWORK=192.168.1.0 # BROADCAST=192.168.1.255 ONBOOT=yes # METRIC=10 # MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no USERCTL=yes # MS_DNS1=205.152.37.23 WIRELESS_MODE=Managed WIRELESS_ESSID=linksys # WIRELESS_NWID=192.168.1.101 # WIRELESS_FREQ=2.4G # WIRELESS_RATE=5.4M # WIRELESS_RTS=2347 # WIRELESS_FRAG=2346 IPV6INIT=no IPV6TO4INIT=no PEERDNS=yes The "#" at the beginning of some of the lines above won't be read. After saving these changes, run dhclient wlan0 again. If anything, we can see if you can get on the network, then change the ifcfg-wlan0 file again. |
Will have to try this later when I get home. (Am in the salt mines now. (figuratively speaking ;) ))
When I originally installed Mandriva 2006 (I didn't have a separate router at the time) I set up the machine to receive its ip address via DHCP from the Westell modem and had no problems. As it happens, I DO have a static ip address, but I never had to key that ip address in during the Mandriva installation. The instructions I used for hooking up the Linksys router to the BellSouth Westell modem are here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6323 Is this methodology perhaps not suitable for retrieving the ip address via DHCP for the router? I am hooked up via Bridged Ethernet from the Westell modem to the Linksys router. The Westell modem is both a modem and router, but, if I understand correctly, the Bridged Ethernet mode should just pass off all the routing functions to Linksys. My machine is hard-connected to the router and I have no connectivity problems, so I am assuming that it is giving out an ip address via DHCP. Is it perhaps not doing so for the wireless machine? Thanks for your help. |
It's just an educated guess, but it appears that the section IPADDR=192.168.1.101 would conflict with the ability for your wireless to get an IP address from the Linksys router. After changing your ifcfg-wlan0 file and running dhclient, do an ifconfig and see if 1. You get an ipaddress. 2. If it's on the same subnet as your "hard-connected" computer.
I'm curious to see your results. Plz, post when convenient. |
Well, to tell you the truth, I'm giving up on this; I'm tired of being the middleman. I told my roommate that if he wants a high speed connection for his machine, he can either spring for another $1200 per year for another dsl line for Linux, or revert to Windows where everything works fine. If he wants to pursue this he can start his own thread.
I've decided not to get a laptop, because I don't want to have to run Windows (if my desktop is Linux), and I don't want additonal dsl costs. I still have usb problems. It hasn't worked right for months. So, I'm also debating whether or not to stay with Linux anyway. Thanks. |
