problem configuring display properties in mandrake 10 install

Hi, I am brand new to linux, this is my first time installing it and I'm having quite a few headeaches. The problem I'm having is that while installing mandrake 10 at the point it requests display info the test does not work, here is my grapics info:

Intel 82852/82855 gm/gme 64mb
plug and play monitor 60hrz.

the computer is a dell laptop 1150, I do not know hwat to enter for the display aside from plug and play and I suspect this is the problem althought that is what windows chooses to run it as. Also I have tried a variety of screen resolutions, using lower ones than the monitor is capable of, also what is bpp? as in 1024 X 7??pp. I have called Dell and thery could not tell me anything about my display other than it is 15' xga, can someone please help, I don't have any hope of using linux if I can't get the gui running right away since I don't know anything about it, I cannot navigate the command line, thank you. Also I notice than in the pdf manual for mandrake install 9.2 it shows screens of graphcial windows and prompts and while I install I get the ugly command line type characters, is this related to display issue?
