Problem after formatting boot partition
 

Hi,

I am in need of some help. I have formatted my boot partition (/dev/hde1) and now I can't re-install Mandrake. The version I'm using is 10.0 and if I try the upgrade option which I thought would fix things, I get an error after the Installing boot loader step where I am told there is no kernel installed. I can go into rescue mode but I'm not sure how to mount my partitions from there. I have this setup:
/dev/hde1 boot ext2
/dev/hde2 swap
/dev/hde3 part 1 of raid array (type 1)

/dev/hdg1 swap
/dev/hdg2 part 2 of raid array

I am writing this from memory, sorry if I got the numbers wrong, it shouldn't matter though.
I have also tried upgrading to 10.1, but the installation will not go beyond ``Installing driver for disk/ide|scsi|hardware-raid|firewire card Intel Corp.|82801 EBICH5 IDE (SATA)'' which comes up after the License step. If I try fdisk /dev/hde in rescue mode with my 10.1 CD I get the error ``Unable to open /dev/hde''. What can I try? I am ok with a complete re-install as long as I can salvage the data on my raid setup. I have tried the latest Knoppix but it will not mount my raid setup, if it could do that then I would be able to save the data. If somebody decides to help me, what other data do I need to provide?

Nobody replied... Does that mean I can't do anything about this? Is my data permanently lost? I find it hard to believe because when I choose the upgrade option in the 10.0 installation I can see it mounting /dev/md0 which is the raid partition. So I should be able to do the same, right? Is there a better place for me to ask?

You could try running a LiveCD distribution and then mounting the errant drive(s) manually.

You'll then need to save your data and re-install as you didn't make a rescue CD.
