Printing problems from KDE

I have a Mandrake 9.1 system, with a Canon i550 usb printer.
For some reason now, I cannot print from any KDE app, such as Kwrite, or Kmail. I am not sure when this started, as I don't print from these apps very often, but I do know that it used to print from them.

I am using Turboprint as well. It seems to be something with the KDE print manager as I have no problems printing from OpenOffice.org or Mozilla. If I go to print from a KDE app, the dialog comes up, and if I just click print, it brings up a dialog saying it is initializing, but hangs the app. It will also hang if I try to click "properties" in the first dialog box.

Any ideas? I don't know where to look.

TIA!
Fred

Try the un the main menu under settings the printing manager ( its also in the control center ).

Make sure the printing system is correct for you as well as the printer driver.

When I updated a while ago, my settings got changed to LPR, so I had to change it back to CUPS to get everthing to work again.

leonscape,
Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have it set to CUPS, and have the turboprint driver selected.
I have also tried deleting the printer, reinstalling, have tried reinstalling turboprint, still no luck.

In the printing manager under instances, their should be a single entry (default) make sure that is clicked and press test. Also check under properties, their should be an entry for users ( scroll down the box on the right as its usually the last entry ) and make sure the your on the allowed list.

When I go to print manager, if I click on instance, or anything else, it hangs.

Then you have got a problem. Does it crash when you select print to file rather than the printer?

This could be indictative of a turboprint driver failure or you've discovered a bug in the print manager ( Might be both as it shouldn't crash ).

This is very strange.

Whats your versions? turboprint/KDE mainly.

No, If I select anything other than the printer it works fine.

I updated the turboprint version, as I thought that might be it, it is now 1.85
KDE is 3.1.0

The latest stable KDE is 3.1.5 although thats only come out in the last few days, you could try 3.1.4 and see if that helps. 1.85 is the latest turboprint.

You could try the Mandrake Club.

You may try going into the harddrake configuration program, select hardware and printers.

Then delete the entry for your printer and set it up again. If it can't find the printer, maybe there is a problem with the usb module setup.

If it is the default printer, does lpr print. Are you using cups?

I have tried deleting the printer and reinstalling. It finds the printer without a problem.

I have also tried printing with lpr, it does not hang that way, but nothing comes out of the printer either. Seems to only hang with CUPS.

I believe the the CUPS scheduler is a httpd client. Do you have apache installed and running. Can you get printing to work using LPD rather than CUPS?

Is the cups service running. su to root and enter:
service cups status

Hopefully you will get a response like this:
cupsd (pid 2275) is running...
