Printer Sharing
 

Hello!

I am trying to set up printer sharing between my Mandrake 9.1 downstairs and my Windows XP Home Upstairs (to which my Lexmark Z53 is connected). In the Mandrake Control Centre Hardware tab, I tried to have it auto-find the printer, but alas it was unable. So I moved into expert mode and specified the network IP, network computer name, printer sharing name, etc. of the printer upstairs, and it appears as though Mandrake was able to find it. I installed the recommended driver, but when I got to the "Print a Test Page" step, everything seemed to work fine on the Linux end, but nothing came out of the printer upstairs. Same story if I try to print from any text editor in Linux. Any help or similar experiences would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

are you using CUPS? if not you should be, it works great.

As you described before, your printer is connected to the winXP machine upstairs, but is it really a network printer, is it really connected to a ethernet card to your XP machine acting this last as a router? Or , more probably, is this printer connected through a usb or parallel port?. If this is the case your started the wrong way to configure your printer in the control center: you choosed network printer but you should choose (I don't remember exactly) an option for a remote printer on a PC of the LAN. Before all this check carefully that everything is well connected and "on". And check also (very important!) than the printer has exactly the same name on both systems. Sometimes is better to delete all bad configuration and start from zero than trying to reconfigure. Anyway, it would helped a lot a full description about how your LAN is set up. Good Luck!

Hi, thanks for your help. I tried both drivers (the CUPS and the recommended one) to no avail. oski is right in that the printer is connected to a serial port upstairs. In the menu, there is an option for 'Network Printer', but I chose 'SMB/Win95/98/NT' printer instead, because I figured I would be sharing it over samba. There is also an option for 'Remote lpd' - should I chose that? I have got a Samba connection working bidirectionally from this computer to my upstairs one, but unfortunately PrintDrake can't seem to get the printer to work. By the way, checking up on other similar problems I made sure that the Workgroup names for both computers are the same, so I don't think that's the problem..

As for my LAN setup, I have a P2600 Mandrake 9.1 downstairs and a P41.7GhZ running WinXP HOME upstairs and a third P2600 running Win98 (but I'm not concerned about that one). All three computers are connected, along with my cable modem, pretty standardly to a D-Link DI-604 Router. As I said, the Samba filesharing and internet sharing work fine, it's just this stupid printer...

In my humble opinion you made the correct election "I chose 'SMB/Win95/98/NT'", indeed the printer was recognised from the Linux machine, but... is this printer configurated to be shared from winXP machine?. You wrote: "I made sure that the Workgroup names for both computers are the same" please double check that also the printer's name is "exactly, including case" the same on every machine. An exemple of bad configuration is to have named the printer in Linux machine as "printer" and in the win machines as "Lexmark" to say something...Excuse me for insist in this. I had this problem but the inverse way: Printer on Linux machine, to be shared with a Win98 PC and I felt as an stupid until I found the fault of to have named the printer with different names. Please, post your experiencies. Thanks!

Thanks again - yes, as far as I can tell, the printer is named the same in Linux as it is upstairs in Windows XP: "Lex". If it's of any help to solving my problem, here is the info I get for the printer when I log into the CUPS control at http://localhost:631

Problem solved!

My problem ended up being that, for some reason, Windows wanted a username for the printer. I went into the CUPS administration and changed my printer config to Device URI smb://user:@Mid/Lex and, low and behold, it worked! Thanks very much oski for all your help!!

Please elaborate on where/how you shanged your printer config. Have tried to use your suggestions in both printerdrake and www cups admin with no success. BTW - Only have issues printing to WinXP Pro boxen (2 of em, one with an HP 660, one with HP 6122) Either printer on a Win98 box worked fine, but Win98 box has gone away. Printing from either winbox to Apollo P2200 on Mandrake works just fine.

Hey Jeff.

The first thing I did was take Oski's advice, and remove my printer entirely (using either the WWW CUPS administration or PrinterDrake, they both work). Then, I installed the printer again using the 'Add Printer' function in the CUPS administration tool. I picked the printer, etc. configuration that suited my Lexmark Z53 (I assume CUPS has drivers for HP printers; hopefully better ones as my alignment is off), and under 'Device URI', I put: "smb://User:@speedy1/hpdeskje" (should there be a 't' on the end?).
In order to make it work, though, you also have to log onto the WinXP machine and actually share the printer (ie: go into the printers list off Control Panel and right-click the printer and share it).
Besides making sure the printer name on my Mandrake computer and my WinXP computer were exactly the same, there really isn't anything else of note that I had to do to get the printer to work. I would verify that the printer path is named correctly in the URI, that you are using some username, and that the printer is properly shared, that's probably where your problem is.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific! I'm just figuring this stuff out too.

I feel so close but I can't make it happen !
I have a Lexmarkz25 connected to a WinXp box and file sharing beween my linux box and the XP works w/o a hitch. I can even print fine if the lexmark is directly attached to my linux box. I tried using the info above adding smb://user:@sharename/printername but to no avail.

Strangely I once got it to work and the job even spooled on the XP machine but hung Windoze (go figure) I rebooted the machine and now I cannot print to it at all. At the commandline I get:

FYI - I had to use foomatic and LPRng to get this printer to print locally. I wonder if I would have better luck with the XP printing to the printer connected to my linux box.

If I issue "lp -p LexmarkZ test" it does not give error info and I here the printer resetting but nothing comes out. I know I am soooo close. AHhhhh! ! ! How frustrating.

I have a question you said the windows machine was looking for a user name?

Like this smb://user:@host/printer share name.

Everytime I go into CUPS and try to config. the Device URI: to add (user:@) it changes back to smb://host/Printer share name.

Does your final Device URI: show (user:@) in it on the status page in CUPS?

Hi people, back again here. For your information I did the set up of my LAN ( P IV 1.4 Ghz dual boot win XP/MDK 9.1 + P 200 MMX win 98, connected through a ADSL Router) with SWAT. It configured my P IV box in Linux mode to share files and printers and it did everything flawlesly. SWAT stands for Samba Web Administration Tool, you can configure your shares with your web browser. Take a time to know exactly what are you doing and sharing with, be cautious about SWAT because it affects directly with security of your LAN! SWAT edits your smb.conf file and backs up by default your former file renaming it as smb.conf.old, so if things go bad you can always delete SWAT-created smb.conf and recover your former one just renaming it. I'm not an advanced user of SWAT, but when I used it many months ago I had only the problem I mentioned before with the share name of my printer. Let's go urpmi swat !

PS: Note that SWAT is good for sharing printers connected to Linux boxes, if it was not clear enough. If the printer is connected to a win box you have to know how to share it from win perspective and then it will be detected automatically by PrinterDrake in MDK Control Center.

Well I was able to get it to work using PrintrDrake.

I think this might help others.

smb://user:@host/printer share name.

User = A user name on the windoz box.
Host = Full computer name in xp not computer description.
Printer = The share name in xp.
